2 posts per week, 12 comments

(posted by Ben, June 2009)

Dear Homeschooling Friends,

Your writing this past month - as always - has been good, challenging, funny, and unique. It will be a sad day when apricotpie dies. Hopefully it has many years ahead.

One thing I am doing that will help keep apricotpie running for the long run is to set limits to the number of posts and comments we can make in a week. As the title of this post suggests, I am limiting us to 2 posts and 12 comments per week.

About two months ago I brought up to the monthly writers this idea of setting limits. Not all of the writers were in favor of it. After some discussion and a vote (none of it entirely democratic) we ended up with the plan to limit apricotpie members to 1 post per week and 7 comments per week. Now I have almost doubled the numbers. There are several reasons why I proposed limits. Here is what I wrote then:

"One thing I like about apricotpie is that writing for apricotpie I can feel safe saying things that are serious and important to me. Not my inmost thoughts, but things that touch upon them. There are many things I personally would never dream about saying on my Facebook profile. Things that would appear ridiculous if they were dragged out into the street. apricotpie, in its design and through its writing, has been a good place for me to talk.

"On Facebook no one has time to pay attention. There are too many things to keep up with and too many social connections to make. Time is an important element to apricotpie. It takes time to write something meaningful. It takes time to be authentic. I trust and believe in quality far more than quantity. When the two are together (Mozart, Bach!) it is hard to believe such good things can emerge so quickly from one person.

"I think apricotpie could be a better place if we had limits to the number of posts and comments we make. 1 post per week, and 7 comments per week. The comments could be made at any time, but you would know that you only had 7 so you would want to spend them well."

For the reasons above, and because it puts less of a burden on apricotpie's system, I like limits. I am also aware that many of the great novelists wrote for periodicals that came out once a month or maybe once every three months. Dickens and Dostoyevsky especially come to mind. Traditionally, storytelling has always involved pauses in-between.

Any thoughts?

-Ben

PS I just made it so that you can post unlimited comments on pages like this one without it affecting your overall comments count. apricotpie may be somewhat quiet for this week until people's numbers recharge.

Hip! Hip! Hurray!

I just sent Ben a "letter of appreciation"!! Hopefully he'll get it :)

Kestrel -- I have figured out the problem that you are confronted with. I submitted a story too and it shows on the site, but not on my profile. I have decided that it is because it hasn't been approved yet (hurry up Ben). My cousin (Nate - dude) has a poem that me submitted and he was telling me it was on the site, but I couldn't find it. When I was at his house yesterday he showed it to me....so all this is to say that, even if it appears on the site, it may not have been approved yet. Try logging out and seeing what happens; that's how I figured out this very puzzling part of our new AP site :D

Tommorow is Ben the Editor Day!

Hey everybody! Since this is where everyone is probably checking for news, I have some for you! Tommorow is BE-Day (heh heh). If you have e-mailed Ben in the past, you probably still have his address somewhere....SO! This is the time to say, "Ben, you're the greatest personage that ever lived! Good job with that!" and then bow and walk off the stage. I don't know what you'll do if you haven't e-mailed him before...maybe, you e-mailed someone else, and maybe they have it...maybe. But we don't want to go around posting someone's
e-mail address all over AP....do we? No. No, I don't think we do. So,

Tommorow is Ben the Editor Day!
The Biggest Day of the Year!

                                            Hurray!!!!

Hi all, I just read over the new problems you have found (including a problem with me not responding to emails? Impossible! Sorry about that.) It will be another day or two before I get back into fixing things up.

Ben,

I've been messing around with AP and I must say I like the new features, but I do miss having a quote on my comments/warmer background colors... but since you've said this is just a 'skeleton' I can wait as long as it takes for things to get to 100%, and I am excited to see what new things you come up with. Thanks for all the hard work. :)

About Ben the Editor Day

Hey! I didn't get sent to the post page when I signed in! Another improvement! But back to what I was going to say. Seeing as contacting other users is not really working right now whether it's going to be re-added or not, why don't we all celebrate Ben The Editor Day by posting essays, stories, or poems saying what we would've in an e-mail.

(BTW, Ben have you recieced any of the e-mails I've sent in the past few months?)

Going on the Record...

To say I love the new AP! And I like the bold, italics, etc too.  I understand it's a work in progress, Ben. C'mon, y'all! We're all authors/artists, we should understand the work in progress thingy! :0) I think this is going to make Apricotpie better than ever!

Putting the blue back in would be cool, yes. Putting an apricot or something other than an onion would be a good idea too. But again, it's a work in progress. I think this site is a ton easier to use, and before too long it will be amazing!

Thanks Ben, for doing everything with this site. I think the best thing about Apricotpie is the healthy environment where homeschool writers can come and grow in their craft. I know it helped me a ton in the past couple of years.

God bless!

Quoting a comment means that

Quoting a comment means that if you want to quote something that someone else says, you click a button, and it is automatically put into your own comment, but it's labeled as being said by somebody else, even though it shows that you quoted it.  Confusing?  Yep.  I think it only happened on the message board though.

I'm starting to like the new site better, although I can't figure out how to email anybody from here.  I still miss the blue, though.  (I have an obsession.  Shh!)  And the onion is kinda growing on me.

All-righty...

So I woke up this morning to my sister bending over my bed shouting, "Have you seen the new AP yet?!" I immediatly went to check it and was, (how shall I say this?) just a teeny bit downcast. But as Lemony Snicket put it, "...first impressions are often entirely wrong," and though I am still missing the old AP, but the new one is growing on me!

I do have a couple of questions though; I hope you don't mind :) 1 - Why does the comments board only show a few of the comments from this piece? 2- what is "workflow" and "draft"? I'm sure I'll figure them out in time, but I was just wondering :D

So anyway...thank you for doing all this work on the site. It's made such a big difference in my writing!

I'm afraid I'm going to have to risk the wrath of Brit, because I just really don't like it. It doesn't feel like Apricotpie any more. I don't know, I can't express it very well. The navigation, while not necessarily harder, isn't as simple, if that makes sense. Also, the new layout seems kind of unfriendly and starchy, like a hospital waiting room. I don't feel at home here.
