The Great Masquerade

A Poem By The Brit // 9/1/2009

We dance, we whisper,
We hide our face.
We hide, we look,
We find no trace.
We look for people;
We look for hearts.
We all deceive,
By skillful arts.

We gaze, we search,
We hide away.
We look, we see,
We hear, we say.
We hide, we seek,
We never find.
We hear them speak,
Yet not their mind.

We love, we hate,
We never tell.
We're strangers all,
Yet know too well.
We laugh, we cry,
We always act.
We say, we lie
Yet all with tact.

We sing, we dance,
We play along.
We put false lyrics,
To every song.
We'll never know--
We shouldn't ask,
Who lies behind
Each painted mask.

Sorry if this was a little...depressing to anyone. But, you know poets...we just do things like that.

I'll admit, it was kind of depressing. But so is the hypocrisy of many people. I appreciate your frankness.

Well, actually, I was kind of

Well, actually, I was kind of saying that we are different people inside and are always hiding something or other, and therefore, we never really know "who lies behind each painted mask." But, thanks for the comment anyway. It's good to know it made you think about it...what higher praise could there be for a poet than the thought of his reader?

I can see that too in the poem. But different people are going to see different things depending on the events in their lives. I've dealt with a lot of hypocrisy and still have bitterness inside from it--therefore, my view of life colored the poem. But I think that that's the value of a well-written poem--each person can take away what applies to his/her life.

It really was an amazing poem, Brit. You're a good poet!

Great, great poem! My view of it was somewhere between yours and Heather's. It is a little bit depressing....true in many ways, though. Very candid and keen. Good job!
