The Clouds

A Poem By Elizabeth Anne // 1/8/2014

I liked you.
There-
I said it.
Do you think
I could have meant it?
I must say-
I knew reality
Would not
Always be kind to me.
But when we
Last spoke-
Really spoke-
You told me
The truth.
It’s good I did
Not place my hope in you
For you were as
Distant as the clouds.

I must admit-
I thought at least
That we would
Always be friends.
But now I see
That we perhaps
Were never friends at all.
If it were
Just me and you-
Would you
Speak to me then?
It’s good I did
Not place my hope in you
For you were as
Distant as the clouds.

I never said it
Until this moment-
Perhaps I should have
Spoken sooner?
If your friends
Were not around
Would you still
Be so arrogant?
It’s good I did
Not place my hope in you
For you were as
Distant as the clouds.

Your friend on your right
Spoke in your ear
And from your mouth
Came words of
Dismissal.
It’s good I did
Not place my hope in you
For you were as
Distant as the clouds.

All I asked
Was for you to speak.
It’s good I did
Not place my hope in you
For you were as
Distant as the clouds.

You are but a child,
But when you grow up-
Perhaps we can be friends?
