Desert Tree

A Poem By Hannah W. // 4/10/2010

You promised that we wouldn't come to this place
promised that we'd be okay
it's all right, you said, but there's no light
and only the evergreens aren't dead
or afraid.

I keep my heart tucked under sand
I keep my soul buried under land
there is the sun, you say, but the morning's not come
ancient, dry bones turned to clay
in my hand.

From the heavens, recall the day, we fell to earth
I remember the way it smelled, wet dirt
we reached for home, reaching high, caught beneath the dome
consumed by the need for the sun; when nigh
it gave thirst.

I am alone, whispering, awake
solitude, this desert place
I will always be near, you told me, but I only feel the sear
of the night, I don't see
your face.

Tweeblaarkanniedood, two leaves that never die,
so they say, and some trees just vanish in the night
there is the sun, you said, and I felt it come
and I felt it on the crest of my head:
Alive.

btw

that crazy word, "Tweeblaarkanniedood"... I didn't make it up. That word is for real. It's the Africaans word for a tree that we call Welwitschia, and it means "two leaves that never die".
Just in case you were wondering. :)

Wow, this was stunning. I loved it. My favorite part was this:

"Tweeblaarkanniedood, two leaves that never die,
so they say, and some trees just vanish in the night
there is the sun, you said, and I felt it come
and I felt it on the crest of my head:

It gave me chills. And that word is great ;)
