Our Parallel December

A Poem By Hannah W. // 11/4/2009

More than the sum of our thoughts
is our parallel December,
moving like a swordfish
under such inclement weather
We are but lonely beings when the wind comes,
to give us feathers

Less than the sum of a soul
is our parallel December,
cradled like an acorn
in such a deep and dark forever
We are but children sleeping when the wind comes,
to say, remember

More than the sum of our coins
is our parallel December,
crouching like a lioness
a tawny, starving mother
We are but wanderers weeping when the wind comes,
to give us wonder

Less than the sum of our hearts
is our parallel December,
huddled like a rosebush
safe within the snow and heather
We are but children hiding  when the wind comes,
to say, remember

A long-forgotten song
is our parallel December
We pretend we are not children,
we pretend we are not children,
but we admit it to the wind when it comes,
to stay forever.

December wears a different aspect in California: gray, smooth, cool, aloof, and even glamorous, rather than inclement or starving. And snow--that's foreign to me. The fact that you managed to alter, at least temporarily, my image of my favorite month is testimony to your great skill as a writer! But I'm rambling. Anyway, I loved this poem.

Wow--there's something so

Wow--there's something so ethereal about this piece. I love the fourth stanza!

Oh, and you'll laugh at this, Hannah--I wrote a poem yesterday, then I looked at it and thought, "Good grief, what am I doing writing this? Hannah would do so much better!" :0)

And now our hearts will beat in time/You say I am yours and you are mine...

Gorgeous.  I had to read it

Gorgeous.  I had to read it through twice to fully understand it...although actually, I'm not quite sure I understand all of it either.  But that's the point of poetry.  Wonderful, wonderful job.

I can't believe you're fourteen.
