An Alarming Amount of Poetry (Part the Fifth)

A Poem By Madeline // 8/20/2013

Ransom

What is this place
That we have fallen hostage to
Or perhaps you're the place
And I'm hostage to you
But the world is expansive
I made it that way
How anyone can call it small
I suppose it still evades
My understanding
It's quick and elusive
That knowledge that I pray
Will finally allow me to
Move on to another
Perhaps take my own hostage

Level Up

I'm running out of dreams that I'm at
Liberty to play
You and her you and him and them
While I sit here, just a game
To who though, I have to ask
Who's the one who holds the controller
And presses buttons
That's what bothers me
That the perpetrator
Is myself
I'm feeling rather empty on the inside
Because I know
Most likely
I'll always just be someone else
To you

Behind My Eyes

I haven't cried because of you yet
But I feel a steady burning
What a waste of my time, my energy
How invested can I possibly get
Before I'm swallowed up
And too taken to
Ever fall in love

Bookmark

I can't put into words what I'm feeling about you
There aren't any correct ones
Perhaps I'll invent my own and
Call you a day

Standard Shipping

I'm alone in this
So I think I'll put on my red boots and
Black skinny jeans
Stand on the porch in the rain
Cross my arms over my chest
And throw my dreams to the wind
But then
My dreams for you are most certainly influenced
By my other ones
If they came true
Then so would you
If I toss you away
Does that signal a white flag
On everything?
What am I supposed to do after that?
Go inside and pretend nothing happened?
That you don't pull the strings on my smile?

Pinched

I'm almost this close to
Giving up on you
One day I guess it'll be okay
I guess I'll be all right

Excuse

Everyone is a friend
And yet again no one is
I'm unsure of what is real
I fake-forgot to fake-pretend

But I Don't Want To

I feel like
You've taken too much of time time already
I feel like
I may have to let you go soon

Sans Box

If I never meet you
At least you have given me this
Some odd awakening
That is liberating
My words are finally coming together
In the way I have longed for
I hope this doesn't end
I hope you haven't given me false hope

Scientific Definition

This feeling is making me
Have a welcome knot in my
Upper abdomen
Every day these dreams seem smaller
More likely to be conquered
Despite the fact that so many
Want the same thing
Perhaps I'll be the lucky one
Who takes the world
And you
By storm

Squirm

If I think about it for too long
About how you go to school and then get a job
Get married
Have kids
The road most traveled
I know it's not for me
That
Disheartening
Existence
I know I cannot do that
The normal
And be happy
So maybe that's why I'm beginning to think
That I can succeed
Elsewhere

Former

Once upon a time I didn't know
Who you were
I wonder how my life would be different if it had stayed that way
I wonder where I'd be if I'd found you sooner

Scratchy Upholstrey

You are a filmy martyr
Foamy like the milk in my
Expresso
I cross my ankles and feel
Sore like your thumb in my
Too-big t shirt and
Too-small jeans
I never want to look like I'm
Trying too hard
When it comes to you
But I always do

If the Time is Right

Is it right that I felt
Hurt today
You said you had someone
In your mind
Of course I know it's not me
And (of course) I wish it was

Off Kilter

Everything is lovely
In its own abstract way
If I squint my eyes
Blur my vision
Even I look perfect sometimes

I Don't Know How Truthful This Is

There is a fear that I didn't know I had
We could grow apart and
Stop being friends
Sometimes I say the things I mean in that instant
Not forever
I want to believe in the forever words so I'll
Try to speak them more

I Should Have Told You

Waltzed out carrying
An accidentally free pack of something
You knew it you kept going
All I could think about
Was how he told me one time when he forgot a bottle of wine
In the bottom of his cart
He didn't see it
Yet he was caught and embarrassed
He said sorry I've never taken anything
Feeling awful and treated unfairly
He hadn't taken
From anybody
And I thought
Well look at you
Taking something
From more than this store
I thought
Well look at you
Not even sorry
And life isn't rude you know
Never blame it on that
It's just people

This Morning

I like feeling sorry for myself sometimes
It gives me an excuse to lay back on my bed and
Cry sometimes

Thank You

I was a little surprised to
Open the card and find
Such a sweet note
I guess it shows who matters
Doesn't it
How people are there for you
And you don't even know it

Comments

These are awesome, as usual.

These are awesome, as usual. They just keep on getting better and better!

"But the world is expansive
I made it that way." That was super cool for some reason.

"I'm running out of dreams that I'm at
Liberty to play
You and her you and him and them
While I sit here, just a game..."I'm feeling rather empty on the inside
Because I know
Most likely
I'll always just be someone else
To you." Those particular lines really jumped out at me.

"Perhaps I'll be the lucky one
Who takes the world
And you
By storm." Those lines were really lovely and hopeful.

"I want to believe in the forever words so I'll
Try to speak them more." That was really beautiful to me for some reason. It felt bittersweet.

I really liked all of the little short poems that you had in here. Those actually tended to be my favorites. Especially This Morning, If the Time is Right, Off Kilter, Pinched, Excuse, and I Don't Want To. I absolutely loved Former. I have encountered several people recently that I have known casually for a few years, but now I can't even remember my life without them being around all the time. Thank You was also lovely. It's great to be recognized if you put a lot of time into something, isn't it?
Anyway, great job, I really enjoyed all of these!

"You were not meant to fit into a shallow box built by someone else." -J. Raymond

Number 5?! Wow. I actually thought you were stopping. :)

Carry on! I love poems!
Standard Shipping: Had this wishing feel to it that I loved. Especially this line: "And throw my dreams to the wind" One day I shall do that. And I like red boots and skinny jeans.
Squirm: Would have been even more cool if you had included the word squirm. I like this poem because it describes what I've done many a time....
Scratchy Upholstrey: Love the imagery. Great job.
If the Time is Right and Off Kilter: I like them both. Nice!
I Don't Know How Truthful This Is: Lovely. It's truthful. :)
I Should Have Told You: Kind of mysterious. "It's just people." Oh yes. Indeed it is.
This Morning: I feel sorry for myself at the weirdest of times. I relate to this one.
Thankyou: *smile*

Yeah, so there's my feedback!

Goodbye? Oh no, please. Can’t we just go back to page one and start all over again?” – Winnie The Pooh
