Our Dream

A Poem By Kestrel // 4/19/2010

I dreamt we went to heaven, me and my best friend
Where we saw sights of splendor and glory without end
We entered a mighty hall and seated on the throne
Was the One whose blood for all our sin atoned.
An old man sat upon the Savior’s lap, but we could only see his back
“My son,” the Savior asked, “Is there anything you lack?”
“Nothing, Lord,” he answered. “For you are enough.”
“But this is still for you, “he gave the man a box large and rough
The man lifted out a leather saddle, bit, and reins
In his eyes, I saw a cowboy thundering across the plains
The next visitor was a bouncing little girl
She sprang into Jesus’ lap, shaking golden curls
He handed her a box pink as the sunrise
“Here, take this surprise.”
She squealed and grinned in glee
As she slid off his knees.

My friend turned to a seraph who had served as our guide
And asked him what these strange boxes held inside
“You will see when your names he calls,”
At that moment, our names filled the hall

When I looked into His face
It overwhelmed me with love and grace
“Is there anything you ask of me?’
“Nothing, since your face I see.”
I laughed. “There is nothing else I need
Of your love I love to read”

His smile stretched across the skies
“I still think you’ll enjoy my surprise.”
Inside the box lay four strange shapes
We stared at them with mouths agape
They were made of pure creativity
and all the beauty eyes could see
Each one leapt onto a shoulder blade
Then we knew the gift He’d gave
Wings! Wings—the gift so long sought
Appeared strange when finally caught
We sprang into the air to soar
High above heaven’s great doors
Without awaiting reply
We pierced the veil of sky
Soaring through the Milky Way
Round Venus and Neptune we play

Finally we returned to the Son
He said, “Your journey’s just begun
I’ll keep these till you come again.”
I dreamt we went to heaven, me and my best friend
