Roses and Thorns

A Poem By Madalyn Clare // 12/6/2017

My rose this time
Is family ties,
Parents loving as can be.

My thorn today:
I don’t feel okay,
In body or mentally.

My complaints
Know no restraints
Because I’m never in the right

My roses, rare
To be compared
With the thorns of my blight.

Roses and thorns
Suf’rings and scores
May I count them ev’ry day.

Thorns and roses
My body opposes
To simple blessing my way.

“Count again
The roses plain,”
The inner voice suggests.

Under order short
From a quiet sort,
I obey and take the test.

Trusting true
In Holy You,
I close my eyes in prayer.

“You made the skies,
The Heavens, and I surmise
You can help me find the roses there.”

My roses now,
In abundance- how?
I feel my aching spirit rise.

I’m smiling more
And healing for sure-
How could roses disguise?

I’ll tell you now
The remedy, and how
I truly love my life.

It’s all because
Roses disguise
In struggle and in strife.

Thorns, in faith,
Are blessings made
As hardness and pain.

Roses still,
Are thorns, and will
Make us holy again.

My rose today?
I don’t feel okay.
Yet my days are back in laughter.

My thorn this time?
I say I feel fine,
And not much sadness comes after.

This is really neat and beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

“The gospel alone is the power of God unto salvation.
Therefore, suffer, yes. Be misunderstood, yes. Be shamed, yes. But do not be ashamed. For the joy set before you, take up your cross, follow Jesus, be shamed and despise the shame!" -- John Piper

Very sweetly written, and a very important message. The heart of it reminds me of a song by Laura Story called Blessings. Thanks for sharing!

I don’t thrive off of chaos: chaos thrives off of me.

Thanks for sharing, Madalyn! :) Feeling low isn't much fun, believe me I know. And yet how good to know that God brings trials in our lives to draw us closer to Him, and make us more like His Son Jesus.

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
— James 1:2-4

You've written a poem that expresses this truth so well. I really like the short lines and meter and easy rhymes... they help convey the message well. :)
