Arya-Chapter Two

Fiction by Sarah H | 12/31/2007

Feeling him shift slightly, Arya pushed herself upright.
“What happened?” he asked; tenderly feeling his head.
“Feels like an Urgal split my skull open with a battle ax!”
“Well,” said she, “you’re not far off. You fell into the lake
And split your head open on a submerged rock.”
“But, I don’t feel any wounds.”
Arya smiled, waiting for him to figure out the obvious.
“Then, you, Arya, must have learned magic?”
Arya smile grew any wider, if that was possible.
“Yes.”
“Arya, that’s great! Awesome, in fact! Let’s go tell your mom!”
Arya shook her head quickly, grabbing his arm.
‘No! I don’t want my Mom to know until I get really powerful!
Will you teach me, Faolin?”
Her last words were spoken so pleadingly, the most hard-hearted elf in Du Weldenvarden couldn’t have said no.
“Wellllll,” he hesitated, scratching the dried blood off his face. “All right.”
“Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!”
She leapt to her feet, pulling him with her, then embraced him excitedly.
“Thank you, Faolin! When do my lessons start?”
“Right now.”
“Now?!”
“Yes, Arya. Here, take this stone, wait, where is my sword?”
“It’s at the bottom of the lake.
But don’t worry!” she said, eager to show off
“I’ll get it!”
She strode to the edge of the island, nervously hoping she was strong enough to do this.
She reached for the barrier in her mind, and pressed against it. Again, light flooded her mind.
“Let the sword be reunited with my hand”
She gasped as an astonishing amount of energy tore out of her body, leaving her gasping for air.
She grew weaker and weaker, suddenly sure she would die.
At the last minute, as she lost all hope, the sword came flying out of the depths of the lake, landing in her hand.
In her weakened state, she was barely able to grasp the sword tightly enough to keep it from falling back into the lake.
She dropped to her knees, unable to move.
She was vaguely aware of Faolin hurrying to her side.
“Barzul! I knew you weren’t strong enough to do something like that!”
He dropped to his knees beside her.
“Arya, can you stand?”
She half-raised the sword.
“I got your sword back.”
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“Arya! Islanzadi would kill me if I let you kill yourself!”
She laughed weakly, every breath hurt, it was an effort to move,
Yet she could feel new energy, already, revitalizing her.
“That took a lot of energy, Faolin.”
“Yeah, I know. And NEVER do something like that again, unless I deem you strong enough!
Arya, please?”
“All right. I’ll be more careful in the future.”
That’s-a-girl. But now, we’d better get back.”
“Um, Faolin? We are going to have to swim, and climb the cliff, and I don’t known if I can do something that strenuous right now.”
“No problem, Arya.”
Arya instantly felt his mind touch hers and an astonishing amount of energy passed from him, to her.
“Faolin?”
She asked worriedly,
“Can you spare that much energy?”
“Don’t worry about it, I’m much stronger than you.”
“All right,” she smiled.
Then, grasping her sword firmly, she slid it into its scabbard,
Then dove into the lake.
Faolin smiled briefly, then whooping with joy, followed suit.

You are an amazing writter. Good work.

Sarah H | Wed, 01/02/2008 - 12:08am

Barzul is a dwarven curse meaning
"bad luck"

Sarah H | Wed, 01/02/2008 - 12:09am

Arya is 12 years of age, right now, at this piont in the story, I am placing Faolin at about 35.

Anna | Wed, 01/02/2008 - 11:12am

good point

Anna | Wed, 01/02/2008 - 11:13am

Ah, a curse. Yes. Now I remember
Orik is definitely my favorite dwarf. He reminds me of Gimli. Prob'ly because he's (maybe) based off Gimli.

I think a lot of things in Eragon are based off of The Lord of the Rings.
For one, i can't be the only one who has noticed the similarities in name between Eragon and Aragorn right??

lol
Sarah H | Wed, 01/02/2008 - 6:49pm

lol

Anna | Fri, 01/04/2008 - 2:46pm

I don't really think about it much because they're such different personalities.

Emily-Smileygirl | Fri, 01/04/2008 - 3:01pm

no...my mom has definitely noticed.

Emily-Smileygirl | Sat, 02/23/2008 - 3:50pm

Not to be rude but CP is such a boaster and bragger and he didn't even make up his own language! JRR. Tolkien made up completely like 6 of the 9. The other 3 were drived! I love the story Eragon but he boasts and brags too much. He'll never be J.R.R. Tolkien or C.S. Lewis.

yep
Tamerah | Sat, 02/23/2008 - 7:11pm

no one will ever be as good as J.R.R. Tolkien or C.S. Lewis and no one will ever write better books than theirs.

Anna | Mon, 02/25/2008 - 2:10pm

He did copy the style, but then, if I wre to write a book where elves and dwarves spoke languages I would definitely do that too. In fact I already have copied Tolkien's style of elves as CP did (only not dwarves, or at least not yet), and fairies too are modeled after them, and the things I name my elves.
I don't blame him. (Though he shouldn't brag about it.)

Sarah H | Mon, 02/25/2008 - 5:59pm

I don't think he copied the elves from Tolkien, they are addmittedly similar, but very, very different.

..
Tamerah | Mon, 02/25/2008 - 10:40pm

I don't like the elves in Eragon very much, probably because I love them so much in LOTR

Shane | Sun, 03/02/2008 - 5:13pm

The reason people see similarities between Tolkien and Christopher P. is that they are both writing drawing on Norse mythological elements. It's got a common origin. Tolkien redeemed the Elf far more then he invented it. Christopher's Elves are closer to the original Norse concept of the Elf.

I can't critisize Christopher, his Elves are much more different from Tolkien's Elves then say, my Elves are. (At least in terms of being an Elf.... Culturally they're loads different. They are similar in feel because they are both redeemed Elves taken out of the pagan mythology they originated in. Therefore they have the same good nature.) I didn't write them to be similar to Tolkien's but because they're both good in spirit those similarities appear none the less.

Sarah H | Sun, 03/02/2008 - 6:30pm

I have read extensively in mythology,
and it is true that CP's elves are closer to the original elves than are Tolkien's.
However, as the case stands, all through history, elves are portraye as powerful, magical, beautiful creatures.
Similar to humans in every aspect, yet very, very different.

Emily-Smileygirl | Mon, 03/03/2008 - 6:55pm

He isn't close, HE USED THE NORSE LANGUAGE! MY BROTHER KNOWS!

Sarah H | Mon, 03/03/2008 - 7:04pm

I know he based the AL off of old Norse.
It was a very clever thing to do.
He based many things off of Old Norse.
Names, Places, He used a lot of Mythology,
and Old Norse mythology is some of the most fascinating.
I'm not suprised he did that at all.

Anna | Mon, 03/03/2008 - 7:16pm

Personally, I don't blame him for any of these things. SO WHAT???????? Emily Smiley-girl, I really like you alot and don't want to be mean but please chill. If everything everyone thought of was completely original there would be like 10 books in thw world.

Sarah H | Tue, 03/04/2008 - 7:05pm

lolz, oh lolz.
true, Anna.
Very very true.

Emily-Smileygirl | Thu, 03/06/2008 - 11:51am

True.......but he boasts too much about it. He says HE wrote the elven language. HE DIDN'T BASE IT, HE TOOK IT.
And I can't stand people like that.
And what's wrong with original? I have to disagree about the original thing. Sure there might be ten books and they don't need to be completely original. When people get bored of it or you want to be creative, original counts. The reason people count original as people overeacting is because they celebrate mediocrity!
I guess I get a bit.......mad at those people.
I'm a creative person. Sometimes I get bored easily with same old same old. Please forgive me if we do not agree. I better stop before I write a whole book on this subject. LOL
And please forgive me if I wrote things that I did not mean!

Emily-Smileygirl | Thu, 03/06/2008 - 11:55am

Anyways, How's everybody?

Anna | Thu, 03/06/2008 - 5:50pm

Oh dear. :( Em, don't be mad at me cuz i didn't mean to make you mad and you misunderstand me completely.
as i have stated, i already agree that he shouldn't brag about it. i'm not too crazy about cp myself, u know.
original is great. i don't celebrate mediocrity. beard of moses, why would i do that?
But if everything were completely and utterly original, not only would it take forever, we would actually have LESS variety than if some things were borrowed. I mean, if you've got one cake using eggs, vanilla, milk, and flour, and no other cakes could have any of those, you would have a depressing shortage of cakes in the world. =)
