It takes a village…………………….

An essay by Sarah H | 1/6/2008

They say, “It takes a village to raise a child”
But did you know that
“It takes a village to clean up
after a windstorm”?
No, I’m serious.
On January 4th 2008 my town
was hit by a windstorm with 80mph
winds, and 100mph gusts.
Power went out, and now, almost 40
hrs later, some parts of town still have no power.
Take my poor pastor for example.
He has no power, and has had no power for the aforesaid
amount of time.
Now I’m not trying to garner your sympathy,
I’m trying to tell you a story.
“Well she ain’t doing a very good job of it is she?”
you’re grumbling.
Well, bear with me, and I’ll attempt to get my
wayward mind back on topic.
*ahem*
Well, as I afore said, we had a violent windstorm on the 4th.
Trees with a diameter of 4 or 5 feet came crashing down all over
town, power poles toppled, all across Washington, Oregon, and California,
havoc was wreaked for 10 straight hours of wind, wind, and more wind.
Today, we had branches as big as trees down across our driveway, it would take
weeks to clean up!
So, what did we do but call some friends.
Gary and Colleen came over from 12;30 to nearly 6;00, just to help us chainsaw up and stack
logs, branches, ect.
They were wonderful!
My Grandma made us all lunch, and we all had a nice time, working.
That sounds like an oxymoron, “We had a nice time working”
No, it’s true. We enjoyed ourselves!
It was back-breaking labor. Heavy, heavy logs had to be picked up, and carried to where they
could be sawed to an appropriate length to be stacked, and small branches has to be hauled to a
burning pile, or broken into kindling for the wood stove.
All day we worked, and guess what,
What would have taken my family alone a 3 or 4 days to accomplish, took
all of us working together, only one day!
See the song “If we all will work together how happy will be” actually has some truth to it!
And all this time we kids thought it was a scam to get us to work!
Well, I’d love to share more with you, but I have to get to bed.
Remind some other time, and I’ll share some more about this catastrophic storm,
or you could just watch the news, either way works.

I definitely understad what you're saying. I've gone through cleaning after a BIG tornado and two ice storms that left a ton of debris. I think that from just a spectator standpoint, the ice storm ws worse. The tornado was bad because it actually affected my family and our life (though it turned out to be a blessing in disguise), but the ice storm was really bad because it left lots of people without power for over a week, and it was so pretty because of all the ice, yet it just about made you sick at the same time to see all those trees and power lines down.
