You’re Not At All What I Expected

A Poem By Wings of Eternity // 11/27/2015

You’re not at all what I expected,
You’re a mystery to me,
A present wrapped undetected,
not placed beneath the tree.

We didn’t meet the way I planned,
all sparkle and romance.
We didn’t meet on moonlit sand
or even at a dance.

I waited for you to notice me,
all dressed up in blue.
But you were too busy to stop and see
the effort I made for you.

Later we met, all tousled and worn
with hair completely a mess,
in old t-shirts and jeans torn,
but the meeting itself: priceless.

You didn’t act the way I thought you would,
You took me by surprise,
It amazes me still how I could
get lost in chocolate eyes.

You’re not at all what I expected,
but I really do not mind.
I love how I was so affected
and how you were so kind.

You could be the one I’ve waited for,
the champion of my heart.
Through gentle words and so much more,
you’ve made an impressive start.

I don’t quite know where we’re going
or what to do from here.
So I’ll just keep my prayers a-flowing
and push away my fear.

I am an overcomer through Christ alone, for the glory of God alone.

Aww, Wings, this is so beautiful!! Perks up my heart. It's true - you can be going along, and NEVER know who you're going to bump into. Also, it's so exciting that you're focusing on writing that you hope to get published....definitely keep us updated with that!

Thanks Sarah Bethany!

Thanks Sarah Bethany for the lovely comment! I'm am glad you enjoyed this one :) Yes, you never quite know who you will meet :) Thanks so much for the encouragement! I am excited about my writing endeavors. I just hope to actually finally finish what I am working on and figure out how I am going to put it all together :) You guys on AP will be one of the first to know anything if I get published somewhere (or even if I finally get things finished and I'm looking for a publisher)!

This is such a sweet poem!

This is such a sweet poem! Even though you describe real events, and portray them as a sort of surprising but everyday occurrence, it sounds so whimsical and wonderful. Thanks so much for sharing!

Thanks Hannah!

I got to say that I love

I got to say that I love this. And I'm SO happy for you! I hope you've been feeling better health wise too!
This style reminded me of the simple styles of Robert Frost or Dickinson. Simple, but you put great description such as "A present wrapped undetected,
not placed beneath the tree." - I just stopped there and read that again, thinking. That was wonderful. He was such a surprise that if he was a gift, it wouldn't be under the tree!!
I love the message of this poem - your complete surprise yet contentment and joy in the way you met. Not in the clouds, but in everyday. I think it could be a good lesson/fresh breath away from the romantic dreams, but into reality - especially for teenage girls.
"You could be the one I’ve waited for,
the champion of my heart." - Champion. <3
"I don’t quite know where we’re going
or what to do from here.
So I’ll just keep my prayers a-flowing
and push away my fear." - and last stanza...thank you for being honest and this shows a glimpse of a big part of your life right now. It was great to end the poem subtly saying you still have to trust in God.
Thank you!

Wow thank you Lucy Anne!

Thank you so much Lucy Anne for your amazing comment! I am so happy that you felt I captured the emotions in this piece, especially with the gift analogy :) I agree with you that so many people (including me) dream of their "prince charming" and tend to overlook the everyday but incredibly wonderful men around them. Some people can't let go of that perfect man with a silver screen meeting moment that they dream of. For me, I had only wanted to see this guy again after thinking about it and realizing that we had a lot more in common then I first realized. God did grant that meeting, but it was in a parking lot, with both of us doing a late-night grocery run. I was a mess after running errands all day, and he had just got off from work. It was not "the perfect meeting", but yet it was incredibly perfect. Even if nothing comes of our meeting from a romantic sense, I found a solid friendship that I am already treasuring. I too hope that other people will learn not to overlook the people they might not normally consider.
As for your comment on the actual poetry itself, I cannot thank you enough! I have always wondered about my writing style for poetry. While I do go outside my style sometimes, I wondered if my style was too simplistic, or not "deep enough". I have read some profound and deep poetry, and think "my goodness, my poetry isn't like that usually!". It thrills me to hear that it is enjoyed just as it is :) Also, commenting that my poetry is similar to Jack Frost's is one of the highest and most humbling compliments I have ever received! I love Jack Frost! His poem "Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening" is the first poem I ever memorized and the one that inspired me to try writing my own!

P.S. Yes, I have been doing somewhat better health-wise. I have been doing a lot of dietary changes lately, and they seem to be helping :) Thank you so much for thinking of me!

This is really lovely! I'm

This is really lovely! I'm glad to have you back on here again, and I'm glad to hear you're doing better. The general nature of your writing has always been very pungent. That may sound like an odd word choice but it's the best way to describe it: it removes all frivolity and gets right down to the heart of the matter; it's very communicative. This has a lot of lovely lines, and I agree with Megan (SEE, LUCY ANNE? YOU SEE?) about the Dickinson likeness. She had a way with metaphor that was very lovely, and this falls right into that style. Some favorite lines and phrases:

A present wrapped undetected,
not placed beneath the tree.

moonlit sand

get lost in chocolate eyes.

all tousled and worn

the champion of my heart.

You're very welcome! I want to keep remembering this poem to help me to guard my thoughts.

And Homey, HAHAHA!

(sorry for the edit, but I wanted to add)

Love,
MEGAN

:)

I love all of this, but especially these lines:
A present wrapped undetected,
not placed beneath the tree.

Wings of Eternity, I usually

Wings of Eternity, I usually don't comment on old posts when I read them late...but I can't keep myself from saying something.

First, congratulations! I pray you will glorify Christ through whatever happens.

Now on to your poem. I think Hannah sums up exactly what I felt when reading the poem. It's beautiful. I felt as if I was dancing over lily pads as I read it. And I must agree with all the above comments, lines three and four were the best!

"My greatest wish for my writing is that it would point you to the Savior."

Thanks Arthur :)

Thank you so much Arthur for taking the time to comment :) I always enjoy hearing from people who read my work whether late or not! Thank you also for the well wishes! I am taking things extremely slow until I find out what God's plans are, but I am very hopeful and trusting God to guide me in whatever His plans may be. God Bless and Merry Christmas!

Good luck on publishing love,

Good luck on publishing love, and good luck with this interesting piece of life. I loved the realness and yes.... Like Homey said, the pungentness.
